Who are animated feature films for these days? Traditionally seen as children’s entertainment, the higher quality entries in this genre have hit a sweet spot with enough sophisticated jokes for parents and adults to enjoy, coupled with cutesy animation to delight children. We have put together a list of movies that fits perfectly into this description. So, get your binge on!
Finding Nemo (2003)

It was a stellar film both for children and adults. The cartoony-animated aspect of Finding Nemo certainly made it a children’s movie. However, the heart of the story appealed to older viewers as well, as it follows a dedicated father searching the ocean for his son who was taken by scuba divers. Often, when we talk about animated movies, an image of kids laughing around comes to mind. But the film, other than making those children laugh, also speaks to the older audience about family equations and love.
The Lion King – Remake (2019)

The only reason, The Lion King Remake is a part of this list is – nostalgia. The animated version of the film, released in the 1990s was an experience for the 90s kids. Those kids are now adults with so many memories associated with the story. They were the first to grow up with Simba, learn the lyrics to, ‘Hakuna Matata‘ and feel the raw pain of watching Mufasa die. The film is perfect for families, but adults will enjoy it more than children.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

If you like superheroes, great music and trippy motion, then this Marvel produced film is perfect for you. Into the Spider-verse is a beautifully put together movie that entertains kids and is a great movie for adults. The story talks about family equations, puberty and responsibility, all the factors that an adult has lived through. In my opinion, it is one of the best films made under the banner and, the Oscar jury agrees, as it won an Academy Award for Best Animated feature in 2018.
The Lego Batman Movie (2017)

The film is a spinoff of The Lego Movie where Will Arnett voiced Batman and, it was probably one of the best things of that earlier movie. Lego Batman is great because it does not stop from poking fun at Batman, his origin, his relationship with Superman, and the odd pairing with Robin. The film will tickle the stomachs of young ones, but also be a great time for adults.
How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

Dragons are many kids’ fantasy animals. How to Train Your Dragon brings together all the things that a child would enjoy animation, music, hints of violence and a good ending. However, unlike other children films by Disney, the film will not bore adults. The movie is both intuitive and entertaining that will keep the kids at heart happy.
Spies in Disguise (2019)

Chiselled Will Smith created by computer animation is a delight for all. Whether you are a child, adult or chicken, the film is for all. Spies in Disguise presents as a spoof on the James Bond-type spy movies that have been a cliche of the genre. It is a funny movie to be enjoyed by all and, there are definitely some scenes that are more of an adult’s speed.
Zootopia (2016)

Zootopia has achieved the blend of cute and sophistication as it seems to skew more adult in its content, if not its characters. The animation is top-notch too, combining cute and cartoonish character design with lifelike realism. Ultimately, all audiences can find something to enjoy in Zootopia, though adults may find more to sink their teeth into.
Ratatouille (2007)

Being an adult does not always mean that every film to watch is filled with violence, drama, or historical value. Set in Paris’s beautiful streets, Ratatouille is a perfect feel-good movie; it has comedy, sentiments, and a happy ending. The film is all about exploring and living one’s dreams no matter who is it. So, next time when you feel stressed or burdened, watch a rat chef cook the best ratatouille!
