Horror is a genre in movies that has a separate fan base. Some people might not even miss one of them, while the others choose to skip them altogether. Whatever be the case, we cannot disregard the fact that these movies bring out our fears of vampires, ghosts, witches, beasts, negative energies, and exorcism. But the good part is we know where to draw the line between the reel and real life.
With this in mind, we bring you Team Brown’s selection of horror movies that will leave you spooked and give you goosebumps.
The Final Destination Series
The Final Destination series! Oh my god, I remember sleeping with my mom and dad 3 nights in a row because that movie had me believing that I might die ANYTIME! Maybe a spider stings me somewhere, and I turn into a zombie, or a random iron rod passes through my body while I drive, or maybe I am walking, and suddenly a pigeon decides to pay a visit, and somehow a glass ceiling falls on top of my head. This particular series of movies had me traumatized. I am not kidding when I say I am a coward when it comes to horror movies. I usually avoid watching them, but somehow the storyline held me from the start to the end. I still cannot dare to watch it for the second time, but I would definitely recommend it to all the horror movie lovers out there.
The Conjuring
The genre of horror movies is not something that appeals to many people. A lot of you might even find this absurd (or funny), but I love to find comic elements in horror movies; they don’t scare me. In fact, one horror movie I loved watching in the theatres is The Conjuring. I remember admiring the camera angles, the effects (although there were minor goof-ups), storyline – everything in that movie was unpredictable – it was the kind of horror that kept me on edge, and I actually enjoyed it. But, I remember how my friend held my hand throughout the movie, and she was petrified. I feel it’s the best horror movie I have watched to date, as it has all the things a good horror movie should have. However, certain visuals that it offers might haunt the viewer for longer, even after they have turned the lights back on. Another fact to note is that it’s set in 1971 and is based on a true story. So, if you haven’t had the chance to watch this amazing movie, I suggest you better grab your popcorn and put the lights out before you sit down to watch this amazing marvel on your screen. A tip: Just in case you feel you’re not bold enough to watch it by yourself, call your friends over or watch it with family – believe me, you won’t regret it!
The Exorcism Of Emily Rose
The Exorcism of Emily Rose is sure to scare and induce some chilling moments within you!
It’s undoubtedly one of the best pure horror genre films out there with a good storyline. The fact that it’s based on true events makes it more disturbing and a really unsettling film. The demonic possession of Emily in the movie was so chilling and still gives me nightmares whenever I think about it. It is one of the most intense, supernatural thrillers I have ever witnessed!
Performances from Laura Linney and Tom Wilkinson kept me on edge and unnerved me from beginning to end. I enjoy courtroom dramas, and they balanced the horror and drama perfectly.
Take my advice – Don’t watch it late at night!
Evil Dead
Horror films are so agitating to watch because they portray all the things you’d most generally prefer to stay away from, in actuality. And yet, I love horror movies. There’s something therapeutic about facing these terrors from the safety of our comforter with a bowl of popcorn. I definitely have a pretty strong stomach when it comes to horror movies. The movie which still gives me goosebumps is none other than Evil Dead (2013). The setting and environment of the entire movie give it a terrifying and dramatic effect. The start is a bit depressing, but it doesn’t stop until everything is literally covered in blood. It doesn’t matter if you like gore or not; one cannot argue its effectiveness in this film. Watching a lot of people die in very gruesome ways, turning into ‘Deadites’ and then chasing down their still-human companions – it was all horrifically satisfying. All in all, this movie successfully horrified the audience with utmost terror.
Under The Shadow
I don’t watch horror movies. Not because I am afraid of them but because I spent my childhood watching Behind The Scenes of horror movies and foley artists create sounds for the jumpscares and creepy parts. And now, whenever I watch a horror movie, my mind is on an entirely different track, thinking about how the scene was shot or how the sound was created – in a studio or on a computer.
But there was one movie that did creep me out and left me wary for a week-long. It was a Persian movie called Under the Shadow (2016). It is about a woman trying to save her daughter and herself from the supernatural forces (jinns) when a missile lands on their building during the Iran-Iraq war. Besides the splendid acting, the creepy possession scenes of the young girl and true depiction of the horrors of war made this movie the best horror I have watched so far.
Pari – Not A Fairytale
There has been a notion that the Indian film industry does not know the ‘H’ in the genre of horror movies. However, my recent encounter with Bollywood’s horror movies makes me disregard this stereotype completely.
It was last year when I decided to watch a horror movie with my mom. We both had heard a lot of praise about this movie, so we thought to take the chance. It was the Anushka Sharma-starring Pari – Not A Fairytale (2018). Going by its name, this movie is not for the ones with faint hearts. The exotic scenes shot in the forests add to the spooky quotient of the movie. The background score, story, concept, and direction of the movie are top-notch, and every thudding sound leaves you scared. You would often find yourselves screaming or shocked by the unexpected moves by the ghost.
The story leaves you sympathizing with the ghost which I feel is the Unique Selling Point (USP) of the movie. Anushka Sharma and her acting skills prove again that she is here to stay for long in the industry. So if you are craving for a good horror movie to satisfy your appetite for the horror movie genre, give Pari a shot, and let me remind you, it is indeed not a fairytale!
