‘Shake It Off’ – Taylor Swift

Anushka Dave

I have so many songs that pick me up when I am down, and choosing just one out of those songs would be so unfair to the other ones. Now that I think of it, I have a bias towards that one song that always has my back after a harsh day. It is ‘Shake It Off‘ by Taylor Swift. One cannot help but bop their heads to this track. The lyrics do full justice to the theme of the song. The song conveys a message that people might hate you, talk behind your back, and might even judge you for being who you are, but you must keep pumping and not let those ‘haters’ sidetrack you. Keep shaking it off and dancing to the rhythm of your life. Being a massive Taylor Swift fan, this song surprised me because I usually replayed all her sad songs and break-up ballads. I am glad she released this track because everyone needs a good dance track and a universal celebration anthem; she served it to us.

‘Sunday Best’ – Surfaces

Madhurima Roy

Some songs can instantly transport me back to those times of high angst, and if you’ve ever experienced this phenomenon (and haven’t we all?), you already know how much power music has to not only reflect our moods but also shape them, as well as shape our memories of certain times and places. The song that makes me happy on my sad days, that reminds me of good times, that can turn a bad mood on its head is Surfaces‘ ‘Sunday Best‘ – “Feeling good like I should!” Queue this up when you need to get pumped, whether for a blind date or a meeting; turn it up and dance your heart out! I play this gem while taking a walk around the neighbourhood or simply while working out, and trust me when I say this, “I Feel Amazing.”

‘Say’ – John Mayer

Anushree Acharya

There are so many songs that have managed to lift me during tough times and helped me stay level-headed. But, if I had to pick just one song, it would be ‘Say‘ by John Mayer. It has lovely background music, and the lyrics are just so beautiful. There was this really tough phase in my life when I just didn’t know who to talk to and in what depth; this song helped me let everything out while I sat with my pen and a journal. John Mayer has a beautiful voice, and listening to the lyrics made me feel like I was talking to a trusted friend, who was nudging me to pour out everything that I had kept buried inside me. I have always loved songs by Mayer; his songs have this amazing way of always striking the right chord. Some days, I just take a drive and listen to it on repeat; that’s enough to lift my spirits and get on with my routine. So, if you haven’t heard this number, just open Spotify and listen to it right now. I am sure it will become your instant favourite!

‘Better When I’m Dancin’ – Meghan Trainor

Jaishree Tambi

Everyone knows that nothing can turn an awful day around like your favourite happy song. My jolt of energy melody is ‘Better When I’m Dancin’ by Meghan Trainor. Whenever I am feeling blue, this song does wonders to infuse joy into my day. This song, called the classic confidence-boosting tune, proves itself every time by boosting my confidence and lifting me in my bad, making me feel like a boss babe. The upbeats and lyrics of the song fully justify themselves to such an extent that they will make you groove and move to the rhythm in a universe of bliss, no matter if you’re shaking out with headphones on or shooting tunes from your car stereo. So, whenever I want to celebrate feeling great or just need a pick-up and some good vibes, this song gets the job done.

‘Patakha Guddi’ – Nooran Sisters

Safiya Khanam

Some songs just make you want to hum along with beats and jam out with people nearby. I think ‘Patakha Guddi by the Nooran sisters from the movie Highway does that for me. A little confession, I do not know the meaning of all the lyrics in it, but I know the song by heart. There’s this freeing rhythmic beat to that entire song that makes you unwind and uplifts your mood instantly. Perhaps it’s also the storyline and the scenes shown in the song with Alia Bhatt travelling around the country and soaking in nature and freedom that came along to her that adds to that energizing effect. One more reason this song will be one of the most played songs on my Spotify is the beautiful memories I have of it. I remember singing ‘Pataka Guddi‘ at the top of my lungs in our after-school classes every time someone’s phone rang with this as their ring tone. Who wouldn’t want to escape reality and have that ‘main character’ moment just by listening to a song, right?

‘Wild Child’ – Enya

Nruthya Johnson

For the past few months, I’ve been digging out songs that I loved and knew the lyrics to by heart. I grew up listening to a lot of 80s and 90s artists – ABBA, Celine Dion, Wham! and so many more. Although 2010s songs like King Princess’s1950‘ and 90s songs like Fool’s Garden’sLemon Tree‘ have been playing on a loop for the past few days, I would say that my go-to happy song is Enya’sWild Child‘. This one just feels like a warm hug. It’s not necessarily a groovy song to pop out a dance to, but the song feels very comforting – almost like a lullaby. This is one of those songs that played in my dad’s car as he drove us back home after a long day out. This song brings back memories of a happier time, when there wasn’t a lot to worry about; when I could just lean on the car window or curl up on the back seat with my brother or even fall asleep in the trunk of the car! The song still does its best to take me to my own happy place.
