Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)
If I had to think of a movie that encapsulates friendship, relationships, adventures, and humour, I could think of nothing but Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Zoya Akhtar’s creation – ZNMD – features, what still is a dream to many friend groups out there, a road trip in Spain. After many years, the ‘three musketeers’ gather to celebrate Abhay Deol’s characters’ bachelor party, where they go through the highs and lows of life together. The movie is a salute to friendship and showcases its essence: the inside jokes, the fights, apologizing, forgiving, and most importantly, standing by each other. It is one of Bollywood’s most popular films for a reason. The movie also talks about life and living in the moment. It highlights that all the materialistic things will soon fade away; what stays is love and acknowledging your existence in the very present.
So, grab some popcorn and gather your friend group. This movie is a rollercoaster of emotions, a ride that one cannot enjoy without a friend.
3 Idiots (2009)
I think every Indian across the world has seen this movie which is why it is one of the biggest blockbusters of Bollywood. If, by any minuscule chance you have not watched this movie yet, you should watch it right away. This movie revolves around 3 friends, so comes the name – “3 Idiots” – where two friends are searching for their long-lost companion. They revisit their college days and recall the memories of their friend who inspired them to think differently, even as the rest of the world called them “idiots”. The very thing that inspired these 3 idiots has inspired everyone.
Idiots in the context of the movie doesn’t mean foolishness. An idiot has been depicted as a person who can go against the masses and think out-of-the-box and come with answers to questions which ordinary minds cannot even think of. No fight has ever been won by the individual alone. It is imperative to have some idiots (friends) with you. Friends who can guide you in the right direction and give you that extra push you need to level up. So, always keep your idiots close. A perfect mix of drama, friendships, love, and sacrifice that you should watch with your besties!
Veere Di Wedding (2018)
The only movie which comes to my mind in this context is Veere Di Wedding. This movie is a finished pack of comedy, laughter, fun, emotions, and every feeling to which friendship is related while brilliantly touching some social topics in a comical yet respectful way. The epic friendship between Sonam Kapoor‘s, Swara Bhaskar’s, Kareena Kapoor‘s, and Shikha Talsania’s characters is what makes this movie worth watching and leaves the audience amazed. It also brings forth all the drama behind Indian weddings, which will make you giggle hard. Even though all of them come from different backgrounds, their friendship unites them all. This movie truly depicts that female friendships are not always about catfights and jealousy, but they can be there for each other without judging themselves. Besides, the fashion sense of the squad is what every girl truly dreams of.
All in all, this is an entertaining watch that will keep you smiling throughout. Whether you’re a man or woman, you’ll be able to relate to this film just as much as I did. So, have a gala time watching these four females and their botched-up lives in Veere Di Wedding.
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)
Talk of movies on friendships and leaving this one behind will not do justice to this list. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has been the most celebrated movie on friendships, and why not! The happening trip to Manali, pomp-and-show, dream wedding, and a scoop of romance makes this one the best to fit in the category of watching it with my best friend. This movie is just a wholesome treat with emotions of nostalgia, love, happiness, sadness, and indescribable moments of brushing off tears from your cheeks while motivating you to achieve what you love in life. It tells how friendships are the relations that come with no strings attached but do need an investment of time to keep those relations alive. Besides, it makes one understand the value of stability in life and how the whole life is not just subjected to living dreams but also to stop at some point and relish the people who have stayed and loved you throughout the journey of your failures as well as success.
Performances by the actors, music, cinematography, and storyline are added bonuses if you and your best friend look for a great cinematic experience and good content. YJHD is undoubtedly a movie that I would recommend you watch with your friends if you still have not.
Rough Night (2017)
There is no other way to watch it but with your best friends. It is one of those movies where a bachelorette group travels to another city for a wild night, but this movie has a twist. It has a murder scene involved. And oh my god, it is super fun to watch it. Scarlett Johannson, Zoe Kravitz, Kate McKinnon, Paul W. Downs, Hasan Minhaj, and so many others make a fabulous star cast to drool over. Moreover, the scenes and craziness that go down make it so relatable and funny and leaves everyone talking about what they would do and or who is more likely to be the said characters.
And by the end of the movie, there will always be that one friend who will plan out her entire bachelorette party down to the last detail with only the existence of a guy missing from their life!
Dil Chahta Hai (2001)
When I think of friendship, the first movie that comes to my mind is ‘Dil Chahta Hai‘. Considered a cult classic today, it was way ahead of its times, and it’s not just about friendship. It revolves around three childhood friends – Akash, Sameer and, Siddharth – with distinct personalities. They share a very special bond and have a great time together, but they get separated after college due to different approaches towards life and relationships. Just like the title suggests, ‘follow your heart in love’, and I believe it was the first movie that did away with the single hero-heroine stereotype. This movie made going to Goa a thing for college students, and the trend is still evergreen 20 years down the line.
In the movie, Akash is a fun-loving guy who doesn’t believe in love, while Sameer falls in love with every girl that he meets; he’s more in love with the idea of being in love. Siddharth is the most sensible one among all of them; he is sensitive, mature, very caring and understanding and seems to understand the true essence of life. Despite being poles apart, I love the camaraderie they share. This movie will always remain very close to my heart, and I watch it every year on the day of its release – 10th August. Also, the soundtrack is terrific. From the peppy ‘Koi Kahe Kehta Rahe‘ to the soulful ‘Kaisi Hai Ye Rut‘, I can listen to this movie’s music album anytime and enjoy it to the core. I haven’t been fortunate when it comes to friendships, but I know I have well-wishers. Each person I have befriended has given me something special to cherish, but my perspective about friendships has changed over the years. So, I might not watch this movie with any particular friend, but I suggest that everyone must watch it at least once to truly understand the essence of the phrase, ‘true friend’.
